OUR CLASSES

Reception (Kindergarten)

In Zambia, Reception is synonymous with Kindergarten. Our Reception class is energetic and enthusiastic to learn! They love to sing songs as loudly as possible. Story time is very popular; almost as popular as nap time!
Our current class has 17 students. Most only speak Bemba, the local language.  Classes are bilingual, taught in both Bemba and English. ​
Emphases of the Reception class include:
  • Basic English vocabulary
  • Numbers and letters
  • Personal hygiene and safety
  • How to participate in a structured class setting​​

1st Grade

The 1st Grade class is full of life and energy! Half of the class are returning Kafakumba Christian School for a second year, while the other half are brand-new students from the communities surrounding Kafakumba. They all love learning, whether the lesson is about global traditions or counting by 5.

Our current class has 16 students. The class is taught in English and Bemba to help grow the students' vocabulary while fostering opportunities for learning.

2nd Grade

The 2nd Grade class love their school, are learning a lot, and have been loved a lot. This year they have been discovering a new-found love of reading!
Our current class has 15 students. The class is taught in English, with Bemba being used to create a link between their native vocabulary and English.
Emphases of the 2nd Grade class include:
  • Expanding reading skills
  • Growing English vocabulary and grammar skills
  • Introducing advanced math concepts
  • Basic science and social studies concepts.
  • Personal hygiene and safety

3rd Grade

Most of the 3rd Grade class has been a part of Kafakumba Christian School since Reception. They are an energetic and enthusiastic group who enjoy learning and developing new skills. They enjoy hands on activities, especially reading chapter books.

4th Grade

The 4th Grade class enjoys learning more about the world around them as they continue to establish fundamental language and reading skills that will prepare them for their bright futures. They enjoy mathematics and science lessons, especially technology studies.
Our current class has 16 students. The class is taught in English, with Bemba only being used to clarify difficult concepts.
Emphases of the Reception class include:
  • Expanding reading skills through chapter books.
  • Growing English vocabulary and grammar skills.
  • Expanding on advanced math concepts including multiplication, division, and fractions.
  • Expanding on science, social studies, and technological studies. 
  • Personal hygiene and safety

5th Grade

  • Expanding reading skills through chapter books.
  • Growing English vocabulary and grammar skills.
  • Expanding on advanced math concepts including multiplication, division, combined operations, factors and multiples, measurement, relations and mapping, geometry, and fractions
  • Expanding on science, social studies, and technological studies. 
  • Home Economics and Expressive Arts.
  • Personal hygiene and safety

6th Grade

  • Growing English vocabulary and grammar skills.
  • Fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion, social and commercial arithmetic, statistics and geometry.
  • Advanced science, social studies, and technological studies. 
  • Home Economics and Expressive Arts.
  • Personal hygiene and safety.

7th Grade

Grade 7 — Key Learning Areas
  • English Language: Reading comprehension, grammar, writing (letters, essays), and use of idioms, proverbs, and figures of speech.
  • Mathematics: Fractions, decimals, percentages, geometry, measurement, and basic algebraic reasoning.
  • Integrated Science: Topics on living things, energy, matter, weather, environment, and simple physical science concepts.
  • Social Studies: Governance, democracy, environment, transport, food security, and community development.
  • Creative & Technology Studies: Practical skills such as crafts, design, home economics, and basic technology.
  • Local Language & Reasoning Skills: Reading, writing, and cultural understanding in a Zambian language; verbal and non-verbal reasoning exercises.

8th Grade

Grade 8 — Key Learning Areas
  • English Language: Comprehension (stories, poems, informational texts), grammar (tenses, parts of speech, punctuation), speaking & listening, and writing (narrative, descriptive, expository).
  • Mathematics: Sets; integers; ratio & proportion; algebraic expressions; scientific notation; Cartesian plane; functions; mensuration & solid shapes; angles; statistics & data representation.
  • Integrated Science: Topics including health & nutrition; pollution (air, water, waste); cell biology; mass and weight; sustainability and environmental issues.
  • Social Studies (Civics / Geography / History combined): Map reading; pre-colonial societies; political developments; systems of governance; rights and responsibilities; effects of human activities on environment; natural resources and climate.
  • Business Studies / Practical Skills: Basics of entrepreneurship, business management, bookkeeping, office practice; developing life skills relevant for work.
  • Religious Education & Local Languages: Moral & spiritual values; understanding different religions; local language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing), oral traditions, poetry/song, proverbs.

9th Grade

Grade 9 — Key Learning Areas
  • English Language: More advanced reading (poetry, drama, non-fiction), improved writing structure (essays, reports, letters), vocabulary expansion, grammar usage, speaking & listening skills.
  • Mathematics: Topics from Grades 8-9 mathematics syllabus — more complex algebra, geometry, measurement, data handling, possibly introduction of functions and coordinate geometry.
  • Business Studies / Commerce: Subjects like wages and salaries, final accounts, personal financial management, banking, filing/postal/telecommunications services, business abbreviations, entrepreneurship basics.
  • Social Studies: Studies of history (pre-colonial societies, colonial & post-colonial), governance & civics (rights / citizenship / elections), map reading, climate, environment, cultural heritage.
  • Zambian / Local Languages & Literature: Listening, speaking, reading, and writing in a local Zambian language; study of literature (poems, stories, proverbs); understanding language structure and translation.
  • Religious Education / Moral Values: Themes like freedom, community, laws, moral & spiritual values, human responsibility in home, school, community; understanding teachings from religions and traditions.
